h. Place the cylinder in a wooden block clamp and secure the clamp in a vise. Turn the cap up tight with the handle of a spanner wrench or similar tool. Do not tighten excessively. i. Release the cylinder from the clamp and reverse the cylinder. Place the end of the piston in a wooden block clamp and secure the clamp in a vise. Thread the piston end on to the piston and tighten with a hard wooden block and a light hammer. j. Install the lever on the cap with the clevis pin and safety the pin with a cotter pin. This lever must be installed as shown in Fig. 100. Do not reverse. k. Release the piston from the wooden clamp and install the hydraulic line assembly on the forward end of the cylinder. l. Insert the cylinder in a vise with aluminum-covered jaws. Replace the through bolt in the end assembly and attach an indicator. Be sure that the face on the dial is turned so that the indicator hand is at zero. Pull the piston end out as far as possible and turn the ball and collar on the indicator to contact the cylinder. The indicator should show the extent of movement of the locks in their locked position. The locks should have backlash of .003 to .006 inch in their locked position. Shims may be added or eliminated from the cap and the bearing to produce the required lock clearance in the locked position. m. Test the retracting strut for leaks before installing in the airplane. The strut must show no leaks at 2500 p.s.i. If the test shows no evidence of leakage, the strut is ready to install in the wing. 4.TO INSTALL THE RETRACTING STRUT IN THE WING. a. To install the retracting strut in the wing, reverse the procedure outlined above. (g) TO DISASSEMBLE AND ASSEMBLE THE TAIL WHEEL RETRACTING STRUT. 1.TO DISASSEMBLE THE RETRACTING STRUT. a. Place the cylinder in a wooden block clamp and insert the clamp in a vise. |
b. Remove the cotter pins, nuts, washers, and bolts attaching the lug to the piston. Slide the lug off the piston and piston guide. c. Remove the cylinder bushing with a spanner wrench. d. Move to the opposite end of the cylinder and remove the cap assembly and shims. e. Grasp the piston guide and push the piston out of the cylinder far enough to free the two locks from the square broached holes. Remove the locks and pull the piston and guide completely out of the cylinder. f. Tip the piston with the guide end up until the actuator, follower, and spring drop out of the piston end. g. Remove the cup from the forward end of the cylinder. The cylinder and piston are disassembled. 2. TO ASSEMBLE THE RETRACTING STRUT- a. Clean all parts thoroughly with alcohol and blow out with compressed air if available. b. Replace all worn packing cups and other parts where necessary. c. Insert the spring and follower into the end of the piston. d. Coat the cups on the actuator with hydraulic oil (Spec. 3586) and slide the actuator into the piston. (Never use mineral oil.) Be very careful not to tear or injure the edges of the packing cups as they enter the cylinder and are pushed past the square broached holes in the lock assembly. e. Wet the cup that fits into the forward end of the cylinder with hydraulic fluid and replace the cup in the cylinder. Be extremely careful not to damage the cup surface on the threads in the end of the cylinder. f. Replace the two locks in the square broached holes and insert the piston and guide into the cylinder, guide end first. g. Screw the bushing into the cylinder until it is tight. Do not tighten the bushing excessively. |
