1. Circle the field at your assigned altitude (not under 1000 feet). Remember, there may be other planes in the pattern, some much slower than your P-40. While you maintain a constant turn, keep a sharp lookout on both sides, above, behind, and in front. Circle around the boundaries of the field, staying close enough to the field and keeping enough altitude to make an emergency landing from any position.
2. While circling make the following prelanding check:
a. Mixture control AUTO RICH.
b. Engine 2600 rpm.
c. Fuel selector valve on the fullest tank.
d. Propeller switches ON and AUTO.
e. Coolant shutters adjusted to keep coolant temperature under 105'
f. Shoulder harness locked.
3. After the tower gives you landing instructions and clearance to approach the field for a peel-off, slow to 170 mph and extend your landing gear. 4. Lock your canopy open.
5. Open your coolant shutters.
6. Check the landing gear with the hand hydraulic pump. Landing gear handle must be in DOWN position.
7. When the check is completed call "Wheels down and locked-Landing" to the control tower.
8. Re-trim the airplane.
9. Make the last turn into the field at an altitude of not less than 500 feet and a distance of not more than 1/4 mile from the end of the run way. Get squared away with the runway.
10. Lower your flaps below 140 mph IAS .11. Establish a glide of 110-115 mph and re-trim the airplane. It is usually a good idea to trim the airplane slightly tail- heavy. Because of the flat angle of the, glide, even with flaps down, your forward view is poor. If you are not absolutely certain that the runway in front of you is clear, go around.
12. Cut your throttle and land 3-point. If you balloon or bounce, correct by using the throttle. If the balloons or bounces are excessive, apply necessary power and go around. Don't jockey the stick and throttle, because this causes you to crow- hop down the runway.
13. Keep the airplane rolling straight down the runway by using rudder and brakes. Don't try to turn off the runway until the airplane has slowed sufficiently to give you complete control over it. Use the brakes sparingly, but use them if you get into trouble
